"The Last Leaf" is a short story written by American author O. Henry. It was first published in 1907 as part of his collection called "The Trimmed Lamp."

The story is set in Greenwich Village, New York City, during the late 1800s. It revolves around two young artists, Johnsy and Sue, who are living together in a small apartment. Johnsy falls ill with pneumonia and believes she will not recover, as she has seen the ivy leaves on an old vine outside their window gradually falling one by one. She becomes fixated on the idea that when the last leaf falls, she will also die.

Sue, worried about her friend's declining health and despondency, seeks help from Behrman, an old artist who lives downstairs. He is known for his artistic talents but has not achieved much recognition or success. Sue convinces him to paint a leaf on the blank wall outside Johnsy's window to give her hope. Behrman reluctantly agrees and starts working on the painting.

Meanwhile, a heavy storm hits the city, and all the remaining leaves on the vine fall except for one that has been painted by Behrman. Sue shares this news with Johnsy and convinces her that the painted leaf must be a sign of hope and determination. Johnsy starts to gain strength and eventually recovers from her illness.

However, when Sue and Johnsy venture outside to thank Behrman for his painting, they discover him lying on his bed, severely ill with pneumonia. He caught the illness while working on the painting in the cold and rainy weather. Behrman's effort to save Johnsy's life had cost him his own.

"The Last Leaf" explores themes of art, sacrifice, hope, and the power of human connection. It teaches the reader the importance of finding inspiration and strength during difficult times, and how seemingly small acts of kindness and determination can have a significant impact on the lives of others.
