The Dragon Boat Festival, or Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday that falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. During this festival, people eat Zongzi, a traditional Chinese food made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves.
On this special day, my family and I gathered together to make Zongzi. First, we soaked the glutinous rice in water for a few hours until it became soft. Then, we washed the bamboo leaves and dried them. Next, we carefully wrapped a handful of glutinous rice with a few mung beans in a bamboo leaf, forming a triangle shape. We tied it with a string to keep it tight. After preparing all the Zongzi, we boiled them in a pot for about two hours until they were cooked.
The smell of the Zongzi filled the air as we cooked them. We couldn't wait to try them! The taste was amazing - the soft and slightly sweet glutinous rice combined with the fragrant bamboo leaves created a delicious treat.
Eating Zongzi on the Dragon Boat Festival is not only a way to celebrate the holiday, but also a way to honor the ancient poet Qu Yuan, who drowned himself in the river to protest against corrupt government officials. People threw Zongzi into the river to prevent fish from eating Qu Yuan's body.
The Dragon Boat Festival is a time for family and traditions. Making and eating Zongzi together is a meaningful and enjoyable activity that brings us closer as a family and reminds us of our cultural heritage.
