天津属于北方。
天津市位于北纬38°34′～40°15′，东经116 °43′～118°4′之间，处于国际时区的东八区。土地总面积11916.85平方公里，疆域周长1290.814公里，其中海岸线长153.334公里，陆界长1137.48 公里。
天津地处太平洋西岸，华北平原东北部，海河流域下游，东临渤海，北依燕山，西靠首都北京，是海河五大支流南运河、子牙河、大清河、永定河、北运河的汇合处和入海口，素有“九河下梢”“河海要冲”之称。
天津是中蒙俄经济走廊主要节点、海上丝绸之路的战略支点、“一带一路”交汇点、亚欧大陆桥最近的东部起点，凭借优越的地理位置和交通条件，成为连接国内外、联系南北方、沟通东西部的重要枢纽，是邻近内陆国家的重要出海口。
天津背靠华北、西北、东北地区，经济腹地辽阔，是中国北方十几个省区市对外交往的重要通道，也是中国北方最大的港口城市。

天津简称津，意为天子经过的渡口，别名津沽、津门等。天津始于隋朝大运河的开通。在南运河和北运河的交汇处、现在的金钢桥三岔河口地方，史称“三会海口”，是天津最早的发祥地。
唐朝中叶以后，天津成为南方粮、绸北运的水陆码头。金代在直沽设“直沽寨”，元朝设“海津镇”，是军事重镇和漕粮转运中心。
明建文二年（公元1400年），朱棣率兵经直沽渡河南下夺取政权，1403年改元永乐。天津作为军事重地，于永乐二年（公元1404年）正式设卫，翌年设天津左卫，转年又增设天津右卫。
清顺治九年（公元1652年）三卫合一，归并于天津卫。从明朝永乐二年（公元1404年）正式建卫到公元2016年，天津建城已有612周年。
1860年天津被辟为通商口岸后，西方列强纷纷在天津设立租界，天津成为中国北方开放的前沿和近代中国洋务运动的基地。军事近代化以及铁路、电报、电话、邮政、采矿、近代教育、司法等方面建设，均开全国之先河，天津成为当时中国第二大工商业城市和北方最大的金融商贸中心。
1949年新中国成立后，天津作为直辖市，经济建设和社会事业全面发展，进一步巩固了中国重要综合性工业基地和商贸中心地位。
