1、The Chinese high-speed rails have a quality all on its own, because it’s so massive.

中国高铁的质量独树一帜,因为它规模庞大。

2、There are more than twice as many high-speed trains in China as the rest of the world combined.

中国拥有高铁的数量是其他国家高铁数量总和的两倍多。

高铁的英语是:高速铁路:High-Speed Railway; 动车:motor car;

第一部分:阅读理解(共两小节,20小题;每小题2分, 满分40分)

第一节 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。(共15小题,满分30分)

A

As a boy I was always small for my age. I was also five years younger than one of my brothers and seven years younger than the other. As a result I often felt left out when their friends came over to play. I was either too small or too young for whatever they were doing and they didn't want their younger brother listening to their conversations either. More often than not I found myself outside playing alone and feeling forgotten.

I remember one spring afternoon feeling especially lonely as I sat in the yard behind our house. We lived miles from town and I hardly saw my own friends outside of school. I heard my brothers laughing from inside the house and felt a single tear coming down my cheek. At that moment I saw a large brown dog walking over to me. He looked happy and his tail was wagging as well. Even though he didn't know me he greeted me like a long lost friend, licking(舔) my chin and sitting beside me on the spring grass. It must have been at least an hour that I patted and talked to this four-legged angel. He let me pour out all my troubles and share my deepest thoughts before he kissed my cheek goodbye and ambled off either to Heaven or his home. I went back inside feeling happy, knowing that no matter what life may hold I was loved. Now over 40 years later I still remember that angel with a smile.

I believe that God sent him at that moment of sadness to remind me just how much he loved me. There is nothing more important than knowing we are loved. When we are loved, we will learn to love others. Learning to love helps us to understand ourselves and other people better.

1.How did the writer feel when his brothers’ friends came?

A. Proud. B. Worried. C. Lonely. D. Happy.

2.The writer shared his troubles and thoughts with the dog because ______.

A. it was his friend B. it could understand him

C. it looked like an angel D. it was friendly to him

3.From Paragraph 2, we can learn that ______.

A. the boy met a long lost friend

B. the boy had no friends at school

C. the dog spent the afternoon with the boy and his brothers

D. the dog helped the boy realize that he was loved

4.The author wrote the story to______.

A. encourage people to talk about their troubles

B. show knowing you are loved is the most important

C. tell people they should treat animals friendly

D. share his unforgettable experience with us

B

I am a good mother to three children. I have tried never to let my profession stand in the way of being a good parent.

I no longer consider myself the center of the universe. I show up. I listen. I try to laugh. I am a good friend to my husband. I have tried to make marriage vows (誓约) mean what they say. I am a good friend to my friends, and they to me. Without them, there would be nothing to say to you today.

So here's what I wanted to tell you today: get a life. A real life, not a desire of the next promotion (提升), the bigger paycheck, the larger house.

Get a life in which you are not alone. Find people you love, and who love you. And remember that love is not leisure(休闲) but work. Pick up the phone. Send an e?mail. Write a letter. And realize that life is the best thing and that you have no business taking it for granted.

It is so easy to waste our lives, our days, our hours, and our minutes. It is so easy to exist instead of living. I learned to live many years ago. Something really, really bad happened to me,something that changed my life. If I had my choice,it would never have been changed at all. And what I learned from it is what, today, seems to be the hardest lesson of all.

I learned to love the journey, not the destination. I learned to look at all the good in the world and tried to give some of it back because I believed in it,completely and totally. And I tried to do that,in part,by telling others what I had learned.

By telling them this:read in the backyard with the sun on your face. Learn to be happy. And think of life as a deadly illness, because if you do,you will live with joy and passion(激情) as it ought to be lived.

5. How did the author form her view of life?

A.Through social experience.

B.By learning from her friends.

C.Through an unfortunate experience.

D. From her children and husband.

6. By the underlined sentence “It is so easy to exist instead of living.” in the fifth paragraph, the author really means that people tend to________.

A.make a living rather than live a real life

B.work rather than enjoy life

C.waste a lot in life

D.forget the most important lesson in life

A.Do it well to serve others.

B.Earn enough money to make life better.

D.Don’t let it affect your real life.

8. It can be inferred from the passage that________.

A.the author is a success in personal life

B.the author doesn’t try her best to work well

C.the author spends all her time caring for her children

D.the author likes traveling very much

C

Mom’s birthday present? It may be a difficult thing for some people, but for me, it is an easy thing. Mom loved flowers, so every year I sent her flowers. Actually she had a bed of irises (鸢尾花) in the backyard of her small, Indiana farm. They were beautiful. “Take some,” she said, “Dig some up and plant them on the side of your own house.”

But in my yard they became lacking in energy. A year passed, then two, but not one flower appeared. I cut back all their green leaves. I was tired of seeing them so lonely. Finally, I dug the irises up and threw them away.

About that time Mom died unexpectedly. My sister and I sold the farm. I never went back to see the irises. I just couldn’t stand seeing another family living in our home—Mom’s home. Autumn came, then winter. The following spring, as Mom’s birthday approached, I struggled with the question of how to remember her. I stared out of the window and saw a few stubborn irises in my side yard sprouting (发芽), —tall, thin but flowerless. Because of seeing them, I decided to order flowers as I always did on Mom’s birthday, and send them to my sister. I wished so badly I could still send flowers to Mom. But that was impossible.

On the morning of Mom’s birthday, I was in my car ready to work. Something in the yard caught my eye. The irises! One had bloomed with flowers, big, showy and purple, as lovely as they ever had been on Mom’s farm. I smiled and turned my eyes upward. I could no longer send flowers to Mom. But somehow, she’d been able to send them to me.

9.According to the first paragraph, Mom ________.

A. didn’t like the presents from the author

B. wanted to give the author some flowers

C. lived with the author on an Indiana farm

D. got different birthday presents from the author every year

10.At first, the irises in the author’s yard ________.

A. all died quickly B. grew as well as on Mom’s farm

C. didn’t bloom at all D. grew better than those on Mom’s farm

11.What troubled the author?

A. She didn’t know how to grow irises.

B. She regretted they had sold Mom’s farm.

C. She couldn’t bear others living in Mom’s home.

D. She didn’t know what to do in memory of Mom.

12.What can be learned from the last paragraph?

A. All the irises in the author’s yard bloomed.

B. The author went to see the irises in Mom’s yard.

C. It was Mom who took care of these irises in the author’s yard.

D. The author thought the blooming irises were gifts from Mom.

D

The following are letters to the editor of a school newspaper.

Dear editor,

I’d like to express my opinion about grades. Students should be allowed to study without worrying about grades. Fortunately, most educators are becoming aware of the fact that students have different interests and abilities. I understand that grades are useful, but grades often limit creativity. Competing for better grades causes many students to turn down opportunities to pursue music, dramatics and sports. Grades force an arbitrary(武断的) standard of success on everyone. I do not demand as some extremists do, that grades be removed immediately. However, I do believe that less emphasis should be placed on grades. I hope that someday grades will become optional at Village High School.

Magdalena Smith

Drama Club

Dear editor,

I’d like to say something about grades. Let’s face the facts about grades. Grades perform three basic functions. First, grades motivate(激发) students to work at their highest level of competence(能力). Second, they act as a reward for hardworking students and as a punishment to students who do not work hard. Finally, grades are used as an effective standard by which to measure students’ achievement. Good grades help students to get jobs and to get into university. I've spoken with a number of students who have jobs, and most of them say that they were hired primarily on the basis of their grades. My grades helped me land a part-time job and will help me get into university next year. I think grades are extremely important at Village High School.

Simon Harper

Science Club

13.Which of the following is not Magdalena Smith’s opinion?

A. Grades should not be used to measure a person’s success.

B. Students may give up the chance to learn music and sports for grades.

C. Students’ creativity may not be developed for grades.

D. Grades should be taken away at once.14.We can learn Simon Harper _____.

A. is concerned about students' creativity

B. believes in the benefits of good grades

C. doesn't work too hard at his studies

D. supports students' interests and abilities

15.From the second letter, we can infer that Simon Harper is a/an_____.

A. student B. teacher C. headmaster D. advertiser

I’m sure lots of children of your age will say “Yes”. Not only the students in China have this problem, but children in the United States also have heavy school bags. Doctors are starting to worry that younge r and younger students are having back and neck problems as a result of school bags being too heavy for them. “It’s hard for me to go upstairs with my bag because it’s so heavy,” said Rick Hammond, an 11-year-old student in the US. Rick is among students who have common school bags with two straps (带子) to carry them, but many other students choose rolling bags. But even with rolling bags, getting up stairs and buses is still a problem for children. Many of them have hurt their backs and necks because of the heavy school bags. But how much is too much? Doctors say students should carry no more than 10% to 15% of their own body weight. Scott Bautch, a back doctor, said children under Grade 4 should stay with 10%. But it is also important that older children don’t stay with over 15%, because their bodies are still growing. “Children are losing their balance and falling down with their school bags,” he said. Parents and teachers are starting to tell children to only take home library books they will be reading that night. Some teachers are using pieces of paper or thin workbooks for students to take home. One of the best answers is, as some children said, to have no homework at all! 21. From the passage we can know that . A. only children in China carry too heavy school bags B. both children in China and the US carry too heavy school bags C. children in other countries don’t carry too heavy bags D. only children in the US carry too heavy school bags 22. Children feel it hard for them to go upstairs because ________. A. they are too young B. they don’t know how to go upstairs C. their school bags are too heavy D. their parents don’t always go upstairs with them together 23. If a child carries a heavy school bag, . A. his back and neck will be hurt B. his head and arms will be hurt C. his hands will be hurt D. his feet will be hurt 24. According to the doctor, Scott Bautch, if a child in Grade 5 weighs about 30 kilos, the school bag he carries should not be over ________. A. 5 kilos B. 3 kilos C. kilos D. kilos B Falling temperatures are no excuse to avoid outdoor exercise with your dog. Along with making sure you are appropriately dressed, your dog should also be properly protected from the elements. Some large breed dogs such as Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds and Huskies can tolerate the colder weather better than others. These dogs may also develop a thicker coat over time as they are exposed to colder weather. Smaller breeds, however, like Chihuahuas and Miniature Pinschers, breeds with short coats and puppies should wear some type of protection, , a coat or sweater, if the temperature drops too low. Look for coats or sweaters with high collars or a turtleneck that covers your dog from the base of the tail on top to the belly underneath. Dog booties (毛线鞋) provide good protection from chemicals or salts on the pavement as well as mud. If you don’t use the booties, be sure to wipe your dog’s paw pads with room temperature water after taking it outside. Other tips When you bathe your dog, dry him completely before taking him out in the cold weather for a walk or exercise. It is especially important to keep your dog well groomed (打扮) during the winter months to protect him from the elements. If your dog frequently participates in outdoor activities during the colder months, increase his food intake, especially protein, to help keep his coat grow thick and healthy. Dogs that are not as a ctive during the winter months may need to have their food consumption reduced. T he amount of time you spend outside with your dog will depend on his size, breed type and age. Remember that ill or elderly dogs are more sensitive to cold weather. Dogs whom cold weather agrees with can spend hours outside without getting cold but some of the smaller and younger dogs’ exercise sessions should be kept shorter. Dogs should not be left outside unattended. Another activity to consider is doggie daycare, which is an excellent alternative during cold weather months. It’s a great place for your dog to get plenty of physical and mental stimulation while being with other dogs. Banfield Pet Hospital 25. The underlined word “elements” in the first paragraph probably means ______. A. extreme weather B. potential enemies C. serious diseases D. terrible accidents 26. Dog owners are advised to ______ in the text. A. bathe their dogs less during the winter months B. avoid outdoor exercise with their dogs in cold weather C. make their dogs wear booties for a walk outside every time D. feed their dogs more food if they’re frequently taking them out in winter 27. The author thinks dog owners should_________ in the cold weather. A. not walk the dog B. protect their dog pets from being hurt C. stop walking the dog D. avoid walking the dog 28 What is the best title for this passage? A. How to make your dog exercise in cold weather B. Walk dogs in the cold weather C. Dogs like to take exercise in winter D. Take good care of dogs C When did you last visit a shopping mall? In many places, the answer would be “last weekend.” Some people go even more often. Why? For one thing, malls offer goods and ser vices that people need all in one place: food, clothing, things for their houses, entertainment, even medical services. So, are malls one of the highlights of modern civilization? Environmental activists would say No! They would go even further and say that consumer behavior is causing a huge environmental disaster. They cause consumers of ignorance of the side effect of their shopping—urban spraw l (扩大) . Social scientists agree that patterns of development have changed the landscape a great deal in the last half century. Before 1950, most people lived in towns or cities and either walked to work or took public transportation. Only very wealthy people had automobiles. Farmers lived in rural areas or isolated villages and came into town only when they needed things they couldn’t produce themselves. If you gazed at the landscape you would see towns surrounded by countryside. Then a massive change occurred. Automobiles became affordable and people were quick to adopt them. Now ambitious workers could live in the suburbs, the areas just outside cities, which started to grow rapidly. As long as there was lots of cheap land in the suburbs, no one paid much attention to the usage of that land. Malls, fast food restaurants, cinemas, and car dealerships spread out in large, flat buildings. These one–storey buildings and their parking lot took up a great deal space. Well– meaning farmers thought they were better off selling their land than growing crops. In ignorance, no one realized that once the land was built up in urban sprawl, the good farming land wo uld be ruined forever. There was no way to preserve it. Only in recent years have people come to mourn the old way of life as they have developed insight into the problems. Now people realize that urban sprawl has come with serious environmental problems. The negative aspects of sprawl include air and water pollution, loss of agricultural land, traffic jams, and the death of businesses in the old town centers. Many scholars think the time has come to analyze the problems better so we can develop appropriate policies to control further sprawl. Some think the best way to do is to educate citizens about their priceless environment. 29. What is mainly discussed in the passage? A. Weekend Fun Sprawl Automobiles Villages 30. What does the underlined word “They” refer to in the first paragraph? A. Scientists B. Activists. C. Farmers. D. Malls 31. Who do environmental activists blame for environmental problems? A. Endangered animals. B. Shopping mall owners. C. Unthinking shoppers. D. Ambitious farmers.

第I卷

Learning to love helps us to understand ourselves and other people better.

did the writer feel when his brothers’ friends came?

A. Proud. B. Worried. C. Lonely. D. Happy.

writer shared his troubles and thoughts with the dog because ______.

A. it was his friend B. it could understand him

Paragraph 2, we can learn that ______.

A. the boy met a long lost friend

B. the boy had no friends at school

C. the dog spent the afternoon with the boy and his brothers

D. the dog helped the boy realize that he was loved

A. encourage people to talk about their troubles

B. show knowing you are loved is the most important

C. tell people they should treat animals friendly

D. share his unforgettable experience with us

5. How did the author form her view of life?

social experience.

learning from her friends.

an unfortunate experience.

D. From her children and husband.

6. By the underlined sentence “It is so easy to exist instead of living.” in the fifth paragraph, the author really means that people tend to________.

’t let it affect your real life.

8. It can be inferred from the passage that________.

author is a success in personal life

author doesn’t try her best to work well

But somehow, she’d been able to send them to me.

to the first paragraph, Mom ________.

A. didn’t like the presents from the author

A. She didn’t know how to grow irises.

B. She regretted they had sold Mom’s farm.

C. She couldn’t bear others living in Mom’s home.

D. She didn’t know what to do in memory of Mom.

can be learned from the last paragraph?

A. All the irises in the author’s yard bloomed.

D. The author thought the blooming irises were gifts from Mom.

Science Club

of the following is not Magdalena Smith’s opinion?

A. Grades should not be used to measure a person’s success.

B. Students may give up the chance to learn music and sports for grades.

C. Students’ creativity may not be developed for grades.

D. Grades should be taken away at can learn Simon Harper _____.

A. is concerned about students' creativity

B. believes in the benefits of good grades
