1950年9月15日，王莘从天津到北京去购买乐器。返程路过天安门时被金色晚霞笼罩的天安门广场吸引，抬头看，一面鲜红的国旗在霞光中高高飘扬，令人心潮澎湃，32岁的王莘灵感突现前面四句歌词脱口而出。
