不管是英文的阅读还是写作，大部分孩子接触到的都是难度相对比较小的“叙述文、故事”，也就是英语中说的Fiction。但实际上能帮助孩子提升英语语言能力以及知识量的是，国内孩子接触比少的“Non-Fiction”。Non-Fiction题材内容阅读理解是英国小学生英文“听说读写”能力的分水岭，也是英国小学的重要知识点。
英文写作是大孩子的事儿，其实这是个误区，如果孩子到了小学高年级才开始英文写作，就会失去循序渐进、逐步提高的机会。怎么在家培养孩子的英语写作能力呢？孩子从学会提笔握笔，写出第一个英文字母，简易单词，到学会写出一个完整的句子，是一个漫长的需要循序渐进的过程。其实英语写作不止关乎语言能力，和中文写作一样，它同样需要从生活中汲取灵感。在美国，幼儿园大班到小学二年级的孩子，每周都会进行写作训练，内容大多和日常生活直接相关。例如，他们每天会在课堂讨论的基础上，描写当日天气，或记录当天的趣味活动；每周，老师们都会带孩子去动物园、公园等户外场所，要求他们写下当天的见闻。因为有了实际经验，孩子们在写作文时，能够有感而发，写出更多生动有趣的细节。建议家长多带孩子体验生活，视野拓宽了之后，写作内容自然而然也就更多了。在开始准备简单的段落写作前，为了拓宽孩子的写作思路，尤其针对幼儿园大班至小学低年级学生，家长可以先与孩子一起头脑风暴（brainstorming），回忆活动细节，列出写作主题以及素材要点。比如，可以先和孩子聊聊，最近生活中有没有发生比较有趣、难忘的事情，用哪些词来形容它最合适？在此过程中，让孩子记录或画下关键信息。在此提供如此可行的思维引导方式：1. 针对幼儿园大班及小学低年级孩子，家长可以让孩子描述“五感”（视觉、听觉、感觉、嗅觉以及味觉），回忆整个活动。2. 针对小学高年级学生，家长可以和孩子一起回忆“5W+1H”要素，写作生动有趣的英语作文，包括When（何时）、Where（何地）、What（何事）、Who（何人）、Why（何因）以及How（怎样发生？）此外，如果孩子对事件的描述与成人所见的不同，家长千万不要限制孩子的想象力，比如，如果有孩子说I saw flowers in swimming pool. 家长千万不要告诉他们泳池里没有花，而是进一步引导孩子，这朵花长什么样、它是什么颜色的，鼓励孩子的创作热情。参考《为什么家长必须提早培养小学生的英语写作能力——英伦云小学》
